The Meaning of Suffering: A reflection from the Old Testament to Contemporary Theology

This paper explores different interpretations of the problem of suffering from a theological perspective. With a progressive genetic approach, it starts from the response of the Old and New Testament in its various traditions. It goes through the reflection of the Fathers of the Church, mainly Cyprian of Carthage and St. Augustine, up to the contemporary theological reflections of Jürgen Moltmann and Han Urs Von Balthasar. It focuses on the idea that suffering can be redemptive by identifying with divine compassion, especially evident in the crucifixion of Christ. The Christian response involves finding meaning in suffering, seeing it as an opportunity for transformation and purification. Emphasizing its redemptive potential in human experience.
