Approach to Hymnology and Poetics in Philippians 2:6-11
Keywords:
hymns, liturgy, Paul, New Testament, New Testament poetryAbstract
In the present work, we will endeavor to determine whether the passage from Philippians 2:6-11 could be considered a hymn and explore its potential relationship with other hymns present in the New Testament. First and foremost, we will define what we mean by the concept of a hymn, extending beyond its contemporary interpretations. To achieve this, we will examine the distinctive characteristics of hymns originating from the Hebrew tradition, as well as those with roots in Greek poetics. Subsequently, our investigation will focus on the presence of hymns in the New Testament and their theological and poetic-literary features. Building upon this definition, we will present some of the arguments found in contemporary exegesis regarding the genre of Philippians 2:6-11. The conclusion will attempt to address the initial question, which inquires whether Philippians 2:6-11 can be considered a hymn and, if so, what relationship it has with other hymns present in the New Testament
