Ecology and the biblical mandate of earth dominion
Keywords:
Creation, dominion, ecology, stewardshipAbstract
Becoming aware of the ecological crisis in the middle of the last century, some progressive intellectuals blamed Western Judeo-Christian culture for the abuse of the planet’s resources and environmental pollution caused by a literal reading of the biblical command to “dominate the earth”. (Gen 1:28). In order to clarify this point, in this work we propose to offer a grammatical-cultural study of the cited biblical text, offering the diverse results of the exegetes and proposing some answers consistent with biblical teaching and Christian ethics.
